The Bigelow Health Sciences Building steps away from the campus mall at an angle, creating a transition for the pedestrian from closed to open space. The highly differentiated forms of the building accentuate the five functions of the College of Health Sciences: laboratories, faculty offices, classrooms, lobby and student commons. Laboratories include nuclear medicine, microbiology, hematology, ultrasound, chemistry and clinical labs. The selection of building materials and colors was influenced both by the contextual campus architecture of masonry and red accents and by the traditional concepts of health. White porcelain panels and contemporary features symbolizing cleanliness and sterility are juxtaposed against the “life force” of the red glazing.
